Theater for Humanity is a path to reconciliation. Instead of armed, uniformed officers confronting people of color in poor neighborhoods, Theater for Humanity asks them to meet at the theater.
THEATER FOR HUMANITY
The 3-month program includes 12 workshops, performances, and dialogue.
From workshops to policy making, our aim is to heal the trauma of arrest, incarceration and bring black women back home, safely.
12 theater-based workshops for police officers and formerly incarcerated black women.
An original play based on the true stories of the workshop participants is performed across the community.
Police officers & formerly incarcerated women lead community dialogues.
Participants create policies that impact their local community.
We support law enforcement as they serve specific populations and address the conditions that keep black women from living a productive life.
Personal Narrative Theater
The Collective Narrative
HOLISTIC & HUMAN-CENTERED
Using theater as the primary tool, the artists (who express a people’s condition), the law enforcement officers (who ensure the people abide by the law) and formerly incarcerated black women (who are often unable to engage with normal legal and social systems) come together to understand, heal and transform.
Artists who implement the Theater for Humanity program bring together formerly incarcerated persons and law enforcement officers to learn storytelling, dialogue, produce an original devised play
For the law enforcement population, Theater for Humanity provides an opportunity to discuss their experiences – highlighting times where they themselves have felt oppressed and marginalized
